STEP 1: Reference Notes
Make a quick reference sheet with the following information noted for a simple transition to better banking

- Before you start. Gather the last three bank statements of the accounts you are closing.
- Make an Estimated Completion Date. Direct deposits usually take effect within three deposit periods and automatic payments normally go into effect within two withdrawal periods.
- Track Your Request. To confirm that your requests have taken effect, check your AB&T statement. Sign up and log onto your online account at abt.bank or call (605) 224-9233.
- Follow Up. Keep your former account open until all direct deposits have been switched to your AB&T account. If you don’t see the change take effect by your estimated completion date, contact the company.
- Reminder. Note that some companies or organizations, like the Social Security Administration, may require a special form. Contact the company or income source to make sure no other forms are required.
STEP 2: Make A Checklist
A switch kit checklist is crucial when changing banks as it ensures a smooth and organized transition, minimizing the risk of financial disruptions.
The checklist below will help you transfer automatic payments, recurring transactions and direct deposits, reducing the chance of missed payments or overdrafts. While this list is comprehensive, you may have additional.
STEP 3: Address Automatic Payments
Gather and review your most recent bank statement. Utilizing the switch kit checklist, note companies that make automatic payments from your account.
Check the company’s website or billing statements for instructions on sending the notice of change. If you can’t locate the information, call the company. Complete the form linked below and submit as directed by the company.
Automatic payments normally go into effect within two withdrawal periods. Track when you notify each company and check the transition has taken affect two months later.
STEP 4: Address Direct Deposits
Review your most recent bank statement and list companies with automatic deposits or deductions (e.g., payroll, Social Security, alimony, dividends, disability payments).
Check the company’s website for instructions on sending the notice of change. If you can’t locate the information, call the company. A voided check may be required. Confirm if any additional forms are needed.
If multiple forms are required, make copies before proceeding. Complete the provided form and submit as directed by the company.
If you receive a Social Security or government check, the easiest way to enroll in direct deposit or switch a direct deposit is to call the number below:

- For Social Security/SSI Checks or other Federal Benefit Payments: www.godirect.gov

STEP 5: Close Your Accounts
After all outstanding checks, automatic payments and direct deposits have cleared in your AB&T account, you’re ready to close your former account(s).
Notify your former financial institution that you are closing your account with the form in this kit. The organization may require additional forms. Contact them to make sure no other items are required.
If you have more than three accounts with the financial institution, please print additional forms as needed.
